In more and more cities, homelessness is becoming a punishable crime. In our mentalities, too, we blame homelessness on alcoholism, laziness, and a lack of will. In reality, a majority of cases arise from complications out of one's control—like domestic violence, unemployment, or medical bills. To be homeless is not a transgression. 

This piece is based off of some folks I used to volunteer with, who kindly shared their stories of homelessness with me.
